Designed to Promote Missionettes
Based on the GM Week Theme"Hidden Trasure in Jars of Clay"
Personal Preparation: Read 2 Cor. 4:6-7; Rom. 12:6-8; Isaiah 64:8. Read the information on this page about the gifts God has given. Purchase and study Don & Katie Fortune’s book, Discover Your Children’s Gifts.
Choose one of the following two options for presentation to the church:
Vignette Option: Create your own props to enhance the script below which can be read by one person or different older girls. Go to the extreme to make your point obvious. For instance, pin dollar bills and bows all over a girl to indicate that she is a “giver.” Set up a pretty table front & center with a wide array of clay pots (some empty, some with plants or flowers).
Power Point Option: A Power Point presentation using the script will be available for download from the Girls’ Ministries Week section of the website about the 3rd week of August. It will have photos as an added feature. There will also be a link to download a free Power Point Presentation reader in case you don’t have Power Point on your computer. Regardless of which option you choose, you will still read the Opening section below to set the stage for your audience.
Opening: Welcome to our celebration of Girls’ Ministries Day which is kicking off a week of discovery for the girls. We’re off to look for hidden treasure. We read that there is treasure hidden away in jars of clay so we’ve been collecting all these clay pots in search of the treasure! Well guess what? As it turns out, WE are the jars of clay to which the clue was referring. We got our clue from 2 Cor. 4:7 which says, “…We have this treasure in jars of clay to show that this all-surpassing power is from God and not from us.” In Bible days, it was customary to hide treasure in a clay jar which had little value or beauty so it wouldn’t call attention to itself or the treasure hidden inside. Isaiah 64:8 tells us that we are the clay and God is the potter. We may be “jars of clay,” but the gifts placed within us are incredible. God took time to make each of us individually. No assembly line production took place when we were made. He then placed within us gifts that shape our lives and personalities. These gifts were not afterthoughts, but part of God’s plan to equip us to accomplish His purpose for our lives. Just as DNA produces our physical characteristics, these motivational gifts given from God produce our interests, abilities, emotions, and actions to make us effective members of the body of Christ. Let’s take a closer look at these gifts.
Romans 12:6-8
“We have different gifts according to the grace given us. If a man’s gift is prophesying, let him use it in proportion to his faith. If it is serving, let him serve; if it is teaching, let him teach; if it is encouraging, let him encourage; if it is contributing to the needs of others, let him give generously; if it is leadership, let him govern diligently; if it is showing mercy, let him do it cheerfully. (NIV)”
Discovering Your Motivational Gift
Many books have been written about spiritual gifts and we’re using one this week called Discover Your Children’s Gifts by Don & Katie Fortune. Based on the Romans listing of gifts, these Christian counselors did years of research and testing on thousands of people. They insist that every single person falls into one of these seven personality categories which coincide with the scripture. Each person has one of these seven gifts that dominate his or her personality. Many people will actually have a second or third gift as well.
Do You Recognize Yourself on This List?
Perceiver; Server; Teacher; Exhorter; Giver; Administrator; Compassion Person
The Perceiver
This word is used to describe the personality traits of those with the prophesy gift. This person clearly perceives the will of God. He sees things in black & white, right or wrong, in God’s will or out of God’s will. The perceiver cannot see life any other way. Mary, the mother of Jesus, had the perceiver personality.
Server
This person loves to serve others. She is always asking, “What can I do to help you?” The server constantly sees opportunities to do things for others. Martha is a rather obvious biblical example of a server personality.
Teacher
This person loves to research and communicate truth. In fact, you could almost call this person a researcher since that interest is so strong. He or she is always seeking, investigating, analyzing, and researching. Priscilla, wife of Aquila, had the teacher personality.
Exhorter
This person loves to encourage others to live life victoriously. These extremely positive people are often called encouragers. They always see the good in people and take every opportunity they have to encourage others and build them up. Barnabas is a good example of the exhorter personality.
Giver
This person loves to give of his time, talents, energy, means, and money to benefit others or advance the gospel. The giver would pull the clothes off her own back to help a person in need. Dorcas demonstrated the traits of the giver personality.
Administrator
This person loves to organize, lead, or direct. It is easy for the administrator to have a good grasp on the whole picture even before it’s painted. She can help others know what they need to do to get the job successfully completed. Deborah & Joseph both developed their administrative personalities.
Compassion Person
This person recognizes those people with wounds and hurts who need healing and sees endless opportunities to express love. Ruth is a great example of the compassionate personality in action.
Uncovering Your Hidden Treasure
Once you have discovered which of these seven gifts were given to you, you have a choice to make. You can choose to use your gift appropriately or you can choose to neglect or even abuse your gift. Take the orange as an example. The outside is covered with a thick protective skin. It is there to protect the sweet fruit that is inside. But as long as the skin stays on the fruit, you are never able to harvest, enjoy, or share what’s inside. It’s the same way with your giftsthose hidden treasures God placed inside your jar of clay before the foundation of the world!! You must peel back the layer of skin to reach the hidden fruit. Just because it’s hidden doesn’t mean it’s not there. However, if you never attempt to reveal the hidden fruit, it will eventually wither and turn sour. As you allow God to take control of your life and learn how to use your gift to His glory, you will become the vessel of His love and will learn how to walk and live in Christ to your fullest potential. Different gifts in the body of Christ create a body of believers that can accomplish great and mighty things for His kingdom. So we invite you to go on the treasure hunt with us this week and discover your gifts and then promise to use them for God’s glory!
