About 65 ladies gathered for the Missionettes Leadership Training in the South Carolina Conf.

Missionettes Leadership Training
by Irvina Parker, General GM Coordinator

South Carolina Conference. Located a few miles west of I-95 is Camp Robinson which plays host to many events for the South Carolina Conference Girls' Ministries. On August 20-21, 2004, I was invited to help do the Missionettes Leadership Training. After leaving the constant traffic of I-95, I soon found myself making jaunts and turns to eventually reach the secluded Camp Robinson. Roxie Lewis, South Carolina Conference Girls' Ministries Coordinator, had told me to be prepared for a rustic campsite. I asked her about power for running my projector and laptop which I normally use in the training sessions. After laughing, she assured me it was available. What Roxie didn't know was that when my husband tells me our campsite will be rustic, he really means rustic. We hike in and there is no water, no electricity, no facilities, etc.

Camp Robinson was a pleasant surprise tucked in amoung the beautiful trees and positioned next to a small lake. Unfortunately, there was no time for the paddle boats. However, it did provide the perfect setting for "Miss Betty" and her drama team to show the leadership in training what happens on a campout when you don't communicate properly and have not prepared adequately. It was a rather comical scenario when the leaders arrived in high heels and were trying to get cell phone signals. (Miss Betty is shown here at the far right while her helper sets up the campfire.)

Fifty-four ladies (plus workers) from 15 different churches in South Carolina attended the MLT for their initial training as Missionettes coordinators and sponsors. They were part of a number of women across the country who committed themselves to serving the girls in their churches and communities. The IPHC Women’s Ministries calendar names August as the emphasis month for leadership training for Girls’ Ministries. Six conferences held this training during August (see special stats box on this web page). In fact, on three out of the four Saturdays in August, I was conducting an MLTC myself (that's me in SC in the photo to the left). While some of those 99 who were trained in August were part of churches already chartered, a large number represented churches who are chartering for the first time. It was a joy to meet so many ladies face to face who will be ministering to our girls in the local churches across the U.S.

In the photo to the right, the ladies are making the offering canisters which are suggested in the GM Week Planning Kit. These 35 mm film canisters hold either $9.50 or $10.00 worth of quarters depending on the brand of film you purchase. A design for printing on labels is provided in the kit. These can be made quickly and then used for the girls to save their quarters for the GM Day Offering. This 2004 offering is helping cover the cost of translating Missionettes leadership materials into Spanish.

Also assisting in the South Carolina Conference MLT were Conference WM Director, Tame Lambert
(on top left) and Pat Catledge (bottom left).

Pat, with her highly energetic style, did a superb job with the training on protecting children and guidelines for the church to follow.

One of the highlights of the day was Miss Roxie's special craft for the ladies. In the photo to the right we are using glue (Mod Podge, to be precise) to place a Missionettes design and tissue paper on the back side of the plate. Each plate used two different colors of tissue
paper which gave the finished product a unique look.
